Street Smarts: Balance Your Look

What makes an outfit work?  In my opinion an outfit works when it enhances the wearer.  It will enhance their best physical features, their personality, and allow them to shine through.

I recently saw a young woman outside my building wearing a very stylish outfit, something along the lines of this:

I loved the outfit, loved the bright tights and everything about it suited her body type and proportions.  The lucky creature certainly had the legs to pull of those tights.  However, there was something amiss. Once my eye left her tights and assessed the rest of the look, it was a bit of an anti-climax.  She looked a bit drab and boring in comparison to her legs.

She was very attractive, and perfectly groomed but her look was unbalanced.  There was nothing near her face to balance the intensity and interest factor of her tights and she was lost.  She needed just a little something to bring the eye back up to focus on her - red lippy, a red brooch or other piece of jewellery, even another colour or anything to provide another focal point (sorry the lippy in the example makes her look a bit like a special doll for grown ups).
Balancing your look

If you have an item in your outfit that brings attention to your lower half, make sure you balance your look by placing something else of interest in the top half. By doing this you will present a streamlined look that enhances you.  Otherwise you may as well wear a paper bag on your head as no one will look there anyway!
