How To: The Boyfriend Cardigan

The boyfriend cardigan (or longline cardigan) has been very popular over the last few seasons and its popularity continues. It's a great item to have in your wardrobe as we transition from winter to spring (and, lately, back to winter again!).

The boyfriend cardi works well for all body shapes. Depending on how you wear it you can create waist definition, visually raise or lower your waistline, or create vertical lines to elongate and disguise problem areas.

Elongate

This look is great for almost any body shape, but particularly apples, diamonds or ovals.  By wearing a long cardigan open you are visually creating vertical panels, detracting from a bulky midriff.  The shawl collar in this example gives you a bit of extra detail that enhances the vertical lines.

Define Waist

Wearing a belt over your cardigan defines your waist.  This is a great look for pears, triangles and hourglasses.  You can also use this look to visually raise your waistline and disguise where your body ends and your legs begin, very good for short legs!

Lower Waist

For those with a short torso you can visually lower your waistline by wearing a belt or tie lower over your cardigan.  Make sure the belt or tie dips into a slight V at the front, or has some other vertical feature to visually elongate your torso.

Diminish Broad Shoulders

A low buttoned V necked cardigan will visually diminish broad shoulders and/or busts by creating a deep vertical line and lower focal point.  This look is great for inverted triangles, or most others with broad shoulders and/or large busts.
